Domain Price Report: What Buyers Actually Paid

This report summarizes publicly reported domain name sales from DNJournal, the long-running industry sales log. It is written for founders, brand and marketing teams, and anyone budgeting to buy a domain name.

Reported sales are not a price list. They show the range of what the market has paid, and how that range moves by extension, name length and year. Every figure below is calculated from the data described in the methodology.

Updated 13 Oct 2026

2021 has the highest median of these years ($333,125). DNJournal calls it a boom year: the $125,000 minimum needed to make its Top 100 was the highest since it began tracking the market in 2003. Source: DNJournal 2021 Top 100 chart.

What this means if you’re buying a domain

  • The headline sales are not the typical sale. The top sale on the 2025 all-extensions chart was $12,000,000, while the median on that chart was $167,655 and the lowest was $99,888. Sales below the chart cut-off are not in this data.
  • Extension changes the price. On the 2019–2025 all-extensions charts, the median .com sale was $153,000 and the median .ai sale was $125,000. Check what comparable names in your extension have sold for before you set a budget.
  • Short names cost more. For .com names with 4 characters or fewer, the median top reported sale was $200,000, against $138,000 for names with 8 characters or more.
  • Use reported sales as a range, not a quote. Many deals are never reported, and each name is priced on its own merits. A reported price tells you what the market has paid for similar names, not what a particular owner will accept.

Methodology

  • Source. All sales come from DNJournal (dnjournal.com): its year-end Top 100 charts for 2019–2025 and its 2026 year-to-date chart. DNJournal converts foreign-currency prices to US dollars, and we use those dollar figures. The dates on DNJournal’s charts are the dates a sale was published, not the dates it happened.
  • 2019–2025: top reported sales only. The headline figures (the .ai count and share, yearly medians, price bands, name length and the yearly top 10) use only each year’s all-extensions Top 100 chart. Each of these charts lists between 100 and 106 sales (ties add a few), 714 sales in total. A sale listed twice in the same chart is counted once. The lowest price on a yearly chart ranges from $50,000 to $125,000 depending on the year, so the set covers only the upper segment of the market and its medians are higher than a market-wide median would be.
  • Country-code and non-.com gTLD charts. DNJournal also publishes a country-code chart (718 sales over these years) and a non-.com gTLD chart (727 sales). They are used only in the labeled extension tables, never added to the all-extensions figures, because they list different sales and would change the shares and medians.
  • 2026 year to date (through 8 Oct 2026). This section uses DNJournal’s own year-to-date all-extensions chart (105 sales), taken as published. It is a partial year, so it is not combined with the yearly charts and is left out of the trend and median comparisons.
  • What is not in the data. Reported sales are a subset of all sales; private deals are often not disclosed. The data does not say who bought a domain, so this report makes no claim about buyer type, and the selling venue is not used.
  • Calculations. Medians use the sale prices as reported. Shares are rounded to one decimal. Extension is the last label of the domain. Name length counts the characters before the first dot.
  • Reproducible. Every figure on this page is calculated by a script from the DNJournal data and can be regenerated. We show summary statistics and at most ten sales per year; the full DNJournal lists are not republished here, and DNJournal remains the original source of the listings.
